For the Domingo’s, family is everything. Teresa and Emmanuel Domingo and their three sons, Josh, Lucas and Kristian enjoyed spending time together, travelling the world and celebrating life’s milestones.

The boys were very close. Like many boys, they enjoyed competing against each other and loved sports. They always had each other’s backs.

The day after Kristian’s high school graduation ceremony, he was diagnosed with cancer. The news was shocking and devastating for everyone. While they each navigated the sadness and anger that came with the diagnosis, Kristian remained hopeful and positive. Throughout his whole journey, the family would follow Kristian’s lead, wherever it would take them.

“When his world collapsed the day after graduation, Kristian felt lost, as our whole family did” says Emmanuel. “But on that day, and many times in the weeks and months to come, he would just be our baby boy. A child that needed reassurances from mom and dad, reassurances that everything would be okay.”

In late 2015 after enduring a year’s worth of treatments the Domingo’s decided to book a trip to Hawaii to rest and recuperate. They spent every day together enjoying the sun, sand and each other’s company. Upon their return home, the family was first introduced to Canuck Place.

“Canuck Place was persistent, but in the kindest, most gentle way possible,” says Emmanuel. “They took their time with us. They listened to us. They understood our fears, and understood our hope. They understood and respected Kristian’s will to live. When we wouldn’t’ go to them, they came to us.”

The care Canuck Place provided the Domingo’s went beyond Kristian- they took care of the whole family. At Canuck Place, families have access to a full-service kitchen that prepares home-cooked meals, incredible recreation therapists and counselling services. It is a home filled with love and surrounded by people who truly understand what is needed in the moment.

While Kristian was receiving care on the medical floor the rest of the family had a private space on the third floor so they could be close and cherish every moment they had together.

The grief of losing Kristian was overwhelming for the entire family. Canuck Place was by their side to support them as they navigated their grief. Canuck Place continues to care for the whole family 4 years later.

“They took care of us, as a family,” says Emmanuel. “They looked after Kristian when Teresa and I needed some sleep, they looked after our meals and even did Kristian’s laundry. They gave us the gift of time… time to allow us to be a family.”
